The Light is Not Quite in Sight - One Room Challenge - Week 3

Hey hey

I’m so glad you’ve made it here again to catch on the last 7 days One Room Challenge antics. First time here? Come check out the first 2 weeks HERE.

Last week was more planning than taking action so of course there were goals to accomplish to arrive at week three.

  • Order the lighting and book an electrician

  • Fills holes and prep for paint touches

  • Receive the curtains from the small mail deliverer and source a contemporary curtain pole to hang them on.

It’s been a week of trying to get straight answers from suppliers. GRRRRRRR! With time ticking delivery dates are a growing concern, but there’s no getting around seeking the right products to suit that space, budget and all the other design criteria.

Chandelier Update

To spread light all over the room the 5 pill chandelier will work wonders for raising the lighting game. But it’s not my only attraction, the new brand House Of are ace too.

The electrician can’t be booked to hang a chandelier that isn’t here, or even purchased yet. I’m still liaising with the House Of to see if the grey smokey glass shades can be replaced with opal alternatives like the brass floor lamp I have my eye on. Finger’s crossed they can be, but until work comes from China I can’t do anything about the situation besides find a back up if the answer isn’t great.

House Of are conscious about plastic not being fantastic so they don’t use plastic in packaging. Plus with limited product runs there’s no excess products sitting unsold on a shelf somewhere.

A fresher lick of Paint

So many dodgy paint jobs have battered the poor window frame over the years. It would be a big job to rub it down to bare wood so i’m going for a Wabi Sabi approach. There’ll be much smoothing down and filling in of the MANY nail holes and then a few lush coatings of St John’s eggshell paint.

Prepping the windows is a big job so the filling continues. Now’s the perfect time to remind you of the safety of wearing a snazzy face mask alongside ventilation. Dust sucks to breath in. As a sand down and gather dust every-flippin’-where the face mask is a saving grace as wellness design should always consider the messier times in transforming any room.

Eggshell from Earthborn the last ORC has now become my brand of choice.

A splash of white eggshell on the interior woodwork is a refreshing combo with teal, don’t you think?

There’s a fascinating stack of history in the paint layers. Layers of the stuff is all over the panelled window and has been since its Georgian origins. Sanding it back to a bare wood state would definitely exceed these 3 humble weeks that we’ve got left of this challenge. Firstly there’s still the shoddy job of removing filler. Talk about a botch job. Who fills in holes and doesn’t sand back to at least a semi smooth state? Then there was the endless tacks painted tightly wedged into the wood. It’s the remnant of the panelling being boarded up with hardboard. And then there’s the dodgy edging around the window panes. Boy are they dodgy!

Last week I was considering either painting the trim in a teal to match the walls OR a creamy neutral as a complete contrast. I decided to go for a subtle creamy white in an eggshell finish and here’s why:

  • Any colour of the window will affect the natural light filtering into the living room. The light neutral will help bounce light around the room especially during these wintery month that's quickly heading our way.

When it comes to interior paint, emulsion or eggshell, Earthborn is my first choice for my home and my client’s alike. After speaking with a rep last week at Decorex who filled me in on its eco credentials it was definitely top of the list for the living room.

It gives a healthy coverage and without a drop of nasty odour as you apply it. The good news is the paint has arrived and is ready to rock and roll.

As an allergy sufferer living with one girly with eczema and another who needs optimal health to be a top athlete, indoor air quality is a matter of sickness or health for all of us. So the levels of VOCs in materials and homeware and furniture is definitely something to keep an eye on. Eco friendly paints like Earthborn are a great wellness decision.

Modern Revamp of an Antique Office Chair

It may be quicker to make a quick stop to the local DIY store, unless Farrow and Ball has the answer, options for eco friendly wall and wood paint is somewhat limited. Even in London. Fist pumps for the rise in internet buying and next working day delivery, a batch of eggshell has already been delivered. is easier on the eye and WAY better for the environment.

Accessories are the jewels and the icing of the cake of your design scheme. These are best collected over time or at least from an assortment of sources.

Jumping Ahead to Finishing Touches

I have to confess that i’ve skipped slightly ahead of the order of things and found a few accessories. I consider accessories to be the jewels and the icing of the cake of the design scheme and as the last to be installed I really had no business buying ceramics just yet. BUT, hear me out. No sane person leaves matching vases in TK Maxx in the hope they’ll still there in 3 weeks time. Right?

Anyway, that’s what receipts are for. If they don’t suit they’ll be returned. Until then they’re safely wrapped up in a corner of the living room.

That’s it for this week, especially since mid way through writing I tested out the new fire alarm with a little kitchen fire (since my ears are still ringing you’ll be happy to know I can hear very well)

Anyway, before you head back here for next week’s happenings, grab yourself some inspiration from the other ORC participants sharing their Week 3 One Room Challenge developments, frustrations and all that good stuff. www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog

What needs to happen by week 4?

  • Rehang shelving so those homeless books finally have a home

  • Give the door a luscious coat of eggshell and source a sexy door handle as a functional embellishment.

  • Hang the curtains once the mammoth job of painting the window has been done. When the curtain pole has been purchased of course.

If your like how the room is taking shape, give this post a like or comment below. Hi5s and curtsies! Til next week

Appreciations!
